The discussion around 'men not talking' often centres on the negative impact on men's mental health and wellbeing. However, a broader, less-discussed issue urgently needs attention: the effect of 'men not talking' on society.
Men are frequently absent from critical discussions, often excluded from the narratives around domestic abuse, sexual violence legislation, homelessness, drug addiction, and advocacy for safer streets. Their health issues and experiences of violence are rarely addressed. The root causes of male suicide remain unexplored, leaving us all worse off.
We have failed men and boys by avoiding these discussions because they are politically unpopular and require bravery, resilience, and self-sacrifice—qualities that seem increasingly rare.
It's not enough to say 'men can talk' if society is too afraid to listen to them. We must listen and reintegrate men and boys into conversations they've been excluded from for decades. We need to uncover what men are not telling us and make a change.
